A Comparative Study of World Religions and Cults

Purpose of Class:

  • (1) To have an understanding of fundamental orthodox biblical Christianity in doctrine and practice.
  • (2) To have an understanding of other cultures and the religions associated with those cultures.
  • (3) To compare biblical Christianity with other belief systems.
  • (4) To develop a love for those of other belief systems with a desire to express God's redeeming love to them.
  • (5) To research and develop methods for providing a witness of the love of Jesus Christ to those of other belief systems.

  • So What’s the Difference, Fritz Ridenour, Regal of Gospel Light, 2001.
  • Design Your Plan to Change Your World, North American Mission Board.

Course Methods:

Class Format:

Students will do an in-depth study of the doctrines and foundation of Christianity that separate it from other beliefs. Through research, videos and field trips students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of other belief systems, while comparing them to the truth of God’s Word. Finally, students will determine the best procedures to use in witnessing the Good News of Jesus Christ to those who have never accepted Christ as personal Savior.

  • Where did cults, Occult and other religions originate?
  • Jehovah’s Witnesses
  • Mormonism
  • New Age
  • Other beliefs (at discretion of students)

Evaluation:

  • Tests 40%
  • Weekly verse quizzes 30%
  • Classwork 20%
  • Service Project 10%

Class Rules and Regulations

The purpose of class rules and regulations is to provide the best learning environment. Anything that distracts from the environment is subject to disciplinary action. Students are expected to abide by the following:
  • Be in their seats and quiet at the bell.
  • Be attentive and take notes.
  • Speak only with permission or during discussion times.
  • Treat others and property with respect.
  • Be reverent in reading, studying, and discussing God's Word
  • All work is to be complete on time: 5 points will be deducted for each day it is late.

Supplies for the World Religions' study (must be brought to class every day):

  • Student Study Bible (NASV, KJV or NKJV)
  • Text: So What's the Difference by Fritz Ridenour
  • Pen (blue or black only)
  • Notebook paper and three-ring binder or spiral notebook

Memory Verses (Quizzes will be scheduled on Thursdays)

Scripture memorization will be from the King James Version or the New American Standard Version of the Bible (Student's choice). Other translations may be used for clarification and understanding of Bible passages. Students should be able to explain the meaning of these verses in class.

Christian Service Project

BEGIN PLANNING YOUR CHRISTIAN/VOLUNTEER SERVICE PROJECT:
  • You must complete 3 hours of Service by the end of each quarter.
  • Do not procrastinate. It counts 10% of your entire grade.
  • Student must complete 3 hours of service by: Date Due:
      • 1st Quarter October 10, 2008
      • 2nd Quarter December 12, 2008
      • 3rd Quarter March 6, 2009
      • 4th Quarter May 15, 2009

Christian/Volunteer Service: Each HS student is to volunteer at a school, church, the community, etc. at least 3 hours per quarter to count as a grade. This is an all or nothing grade. Anything less than 3 hours will count as a "0". The student must fill out a form and get his supervisor or parent to sign it.

Any student volunteering a total of 20 hours or more during the school year and previous summer will receive a Christian service award at the end of the year. The final turn-in day for counting toward the 20 hours is the second Wednesday in May.

The following do not qualify for volunteer work:

  • 1. Receiving compensation of any kind for work done
  • 2. Serving Saturday detentions or detention after school
  • 3. Babysitting for family members
  • 4. Participating in self-improvement workshops
  • 5. Performing service during school hours
  • 6. Participating in rehearsal or practice times after school hours

The following activities qualify as volunteer work:

  • 1. Volunteering at a nursing home, rescue mission, thrift store, etc.
  • 2. Helping in the nursery at church
  • 3. Going on mission trips
  • 4. Assisting on a school clean-up day
  • 5. Tutoring (after school) Note: the teacher of the subject should be informed of time and day.
  • 6. Passing out tracts
  • 7. Participating in youth group outreach activities
  • 8. Working in Vacation Bible School
  • 9. Helping in Awanas
  • 10. Assisting in Special Olympics
