Mrs. Rebecca Buffaloe
Thank you for your interest in helping Chaplain King and the soldiers.
I'm sorry I was out of the office yesterday, and just got your message
today.
I'll be in the office "most" of the day, so you may email your
questions, or try calling when you're free. work 707-5369. I'll also
be home tomorrow 772-3482 until around 1:00, and then return around 6pm.
You mentioned Christmas decorations.
General information:
It is suggested to mail boxes by December 1st or a day or two after for
them to get the stuff by Christmas. The Mail & More store next to Belks
at North/South Station has different size boxes. The mid size I usually
send "about" 15x15 with about 50 pounds usually costs $20-25 to ship.
It is much cheaper to mail through the post office. You can get used
boxes anywhere for nothing. Put lots of tape on them. Tape over the
name and address of the sender and receiver, clear tape. On the customs
form put "supplies and snacks". Do "not" put Christmas on the box.
Boxes have gotten stolen. Normally it takes an average of 10 days to
receive packages. If you're 100% sure you'll get the Christmas stuff to
him, let me know so I can let him know it is coming. Please put WCA's
name and your name on the return address. That way he'll know it is the
decorations and not just candy and snacks.
He needs phone cards and any Christmas decorations. Suggestions:
artificial tree and NON breakable decorations, lights, cards for the
soldiers (est. 165 in his unit), Christmas candy, cookies, nuts, snacks,
trail mix... Chocolate is ok this time of year. WCA
newspapers/newsletters, picture of the class donating/packaging stuff.
If you get Garner Citizen to cover this and it's in the paper, send a
copy of that paper later.
It is NOT recommended to send home baked cakes... They spoil to
quickly. Cookies, any kind, homemade or bought and rice krispie treats,
their favorite, are ok. If homemade - package them in ziploc bags with
the air drawn out. You can get the bags that has the little blue circle
on them and you use a pump to take the air out. They are very fresh.
Line the box with tiny bubble paper (if homemade goodies), and they
aren't all crumbs by they time they arrive. If you send snacksAlways
send a couple boxes of sandwich size ziploc baggies so they can take a
snack back to their bunks for later.
You ladies are welcome to call me with further questions. Always leave
a message at work AND home and I will call you back as soon as I get the
message.
God Bles you for all your efforts.
VETERANS APPRECIATION MONTH
Ways to Encourage Our Veterans, Our Deployed, and Family Members of Those Deployed
1. Identify a veteran who could use some help. 2. . Ask: · Friends, · Family, · At church, · VFW groups, VFW Post 10225, Garner · NC Blue Star Mothers of America, Ins. NC Chapter #7, · Triangle Baptist Church on Old Stage Road. (Go to their web site for excellent information)
Mrs. Ronna Jones ( A former WCA parent) (772-3482) is the major contact person for Triangle's ministry to the families of those deployed. There will soon be thousands of soldiers leaving the surrounding counties, as well as, Wake Co. and she is going to keep me updated of needs from Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey needs to toys, gas cards, grocery store cards, Wal-Mart cards, etc. I also asked to continue this past Nov. and I will be announcing where this will be posted. One great program she has is a bandana with the 91st Psalm on it for $3. 50 and there are lots of requests for those by the deployed soldiers. If you know of other churches with military ministries let me know, please.
3. Contact the USO at Raleigh-Durham Airport. They are located at Terminal A at the end on the second floor. It is open 24/7 and staffed by volunteers. If you are over 18 you can actually volunteer by helping the military and their families as they past through our area. They desperately need volunteers. Contact person I spoke to is Erin Desantis @ 840-0941. You can go to USO-NC.org to download a volunteer form which has to be checked out. Other needs: Games Toys for children Books for children Coloring books and Crayons Magazines Playstations, Wii, Gamecube Blankets and pillows Homemade foods such as cookies-they like to have them bagged so they can give some to the soldier or family when they depart. Meals that can be cooked and reheated. Lasagna, soup, stews, casseroles. Fruit (bananas, apples, grapes, fruit trays and vegetables Any snacks-just label anything that has nuts due to allergies! Diapers and wipes First aid items. Bottled water.
4. Things to do for a vet around your area: Grocery shop Mow grass Cut wood Paint and repair work Run errands Baby-sit Provide a meal or take the family out to eat to say "Thank You"
MILITARY MINISTRIES IN NORCH CAROLINA (10/24/08)
1. We have a Military Family Support Group at Triangle Baptist Church, 9713 Old Stage Road, Raleigh, NC 27603, Phone-661-7755, www.tribaptist.org There are families, and friends of soldiers from all branches of service that come to receive support, love, hugs, encouragement, prayer, education to help them survive the emotional/physical/practical hardships while their soldier is deployed. There are often needs we can't meet, so we tell people that want to help us help the families to donate WalMart? , Food Lion, gas station, restaurant and movie - gift cards. We also occasionally help with minor house/yard/ maintenance, and have bought some heating gas. We don’t have any car mechanics or anyone that could donate labor. Some of them struggle financially, so these gift cards help to lighten the burden. At the meetings we have sharing time and education classes (coping skills, depression, communication…). This group meets on the 2nd Monday and 4th Tuesday at 6:30. Child care is provided. Our adopted Bible verse is Galations 6:2, Bear one anothers burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. That's our mission. Some have come to know he Lord and started going to church, and others have developed a deeper relationship with Him because of this outreach ministry - Amen! Coordinator-Ronna Jones, 772-3482
2. Operation Bandanas. Mary Gray. www.operationbandanas.org This is a ministry to get the 91st Psalm bandanas, called the soldiers prayer, in the hands of all deployed soldiers. The chaplains are asking for them by the thousands. We need the funds for 3,000 more bandanas now to supply the NC National Guard (NCNG), that has 4000 troops leaving now, through January, 09. These bandanas have saved the lives of soldiers, both spiritually and physically. They are all asking for them now, which certainly makes the chaplains happy. The stories just tear you up, and bless you greatly. Unless someone sponsors the cost of $5 each Mary can't purchase and ship them. They only cost $5 each, plus a donation for shipping costs. Occasionally a church will sponsor 50 or so, but that doesn't supply the many requests. This would be a fun hands on project for the kids. She could ship the bundle to your group, and you could fold and package them. They could even make a small card, or write a letter to include in the "sandwich size" baggie.
3. NCNG Family Assistance Center, Raleigh, Alice Dean Coordinator, Alice.Dean Alice.Dean@nc.ng.ngb.army.mil 664-7616. Alice and her team are in charge of getting families ready to let go of their loved ones before deployment, and do what they can to assist them and the soldiers while the soldiers are gone. It is a monumental task and they can't do it without churches, organizations, and individuals donations of needed items. Sometimes they have families to adopt a) to provide food (not cooked) for their Thanksgiving dinners, and Christmas food, toys, clothes...There are needs all during the year too. They have a special emphasis for kids. It’s called Kids on Guard. They bring them together 3-4 times a year for a day, or weekend for fun, and education. There are experts that talk to the kids and answer their questions. (example - a medic is asked, do you take care of my daddy if he gets hurt, and he answers them truthfully but in reassuring words.) They often need “stuff” to give the kids during these days. They make a take away package for them.
4. Pocket Flags: www.PocketFlagProject.com This is also a fun project for "older" kids to do. Their goal is to get a pocket flag in every deployed soldier's pocket. The website is very detailed and it is a fun “challenge” to get the flags trimmed and folded correctly to fit in a jewelry size 2x3 baggie.
5. Quick Series booklets. www.quickseries.com choose government, Department of Defense, click on Army, or National Guard for a sample. Most of the branches of service have the same booklets but a few different ones are available too. They just put their branch on the front. We like to give these to the families but we don’t always have the funds to purchase them. The National Guard/Reserve has one for parents of soldiers we’d like to get seeing we have 20 parents of soldiers. The chaplains also want more of these to give out. They have to counsel the soldiers on many issues, stress, anger, depression, PTSD... and these small booklets are what the soldier will read. If you purchase 25+ booklets they will put your school name on the front for free. I can find out which subjects besides those listed above, that are needed the most.
6. Some of the Dollar Tree Stores will have a box to buy a soldier's kid a toy. I can find out which ones.
There are other things as well on the net, but most are "not" reliable. These are ones I have been working with, or know other people that have, for 3 1/2 years and know they are reputable. I also have the contacts of where to send stuff to get them in the right hands that will assure the troops get them. When you all decide what you want to do, please let me know, I'd love to come by and show your group the bandanas, flags and booklets I have on hand and answer any other questions, such as shipping do's and don'ts and tips for the best rates.
I hope your group will help with the bandanas because we really want to get the word of God, into the hands of all our NC troops. And the booklets are really needed. But anything you decide will be very appreciated.
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS- Notes: PARENTS-PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BEST WAY TO REACH ME AT ANY TIME IS THROUGH E-MAIL. I AM ON THE COMPUTER A GREAT DEAL BECAUSE I TEACH CURRENT EVENTS, SO I CHECK MY E-MAIL QUITE A BIT. YOU CAN REACH ME AT
E-mail Rebecca Buffaloe.
Testing Calendar for 2nd Quarter: I will provide a calendar for November and December for each student. If a student needs a second calendar to leave at home please let me know.
Dear Parents and students,
I welcome you and your child to Social Studies. The teaching of history can be very frustrating because a high school course can only be an overview and much of what a person learns of history is through individual study, news, current events, books, and conversation. As intense as I am in the teaching of history, I cannot cover every topic in depth.
Homework will not be overwhelming, but it will be important. Any homework assignment can be taken up and graded as a quiz. It is imperative for that reason that homework is done carefully. Students should be diligent in spelling words correctly in homework. Sometimes, instead of being weak spellers, students are careless in copying answers from the book. Homework counts 25% of the grade. All students begin the 9 weeks with a 100 average. Each assignment, which is not done or not completed, costs the student 5 points which can add up over a period of 9 weeks. Many people come close to failing history for no other reason than not doing homework.
Grammar and spelling will be graded on essays. Many students are upset by the fact that English is being graded in a Social Studies course, but it is necessary that there is accountability for proper grammar in a subject areas.
I do not require a term paper, but there will be a great emphasis on essay writing. Students need to know how to organize thoughts and present them. Another weak area we will address is in the area of critical thinking. Many students have trouble finding information that is inferred-not stated.
Throughout the year we will have different projects that can be enjoyable such as dioramas, skits, history dress-up days, and other various assignments. Students are also encouraged to share with the class if they visit historical sites. Extra credit can be given for such visits as they can greatly add to a student’s knowledge of events in history. Another wonderful outcome of this is that a teacher can learn from his or her student. A summary of the visit and items that were interesting to the student is what is required for extra credit. A major project for Honors US History is Project Memoirs which will be due all 4 quarters.
There are several major lessons, which I sincerely want my students to absorb before they leave my classroom. The first aim is that they will know, without hesitation, who America’s true heroes are. After September 11th, 2001, all of us realize the courage of our rescue personnel and we need to teach and emphasize a respect for all who lay their lives on the line for us. Students must also learn that Memorial Day and Veterans Day are not just holidays. They need to understand the bravery of a nineteen-year-old young person who leaves home to go to a foreign land to die rather than run away to Canada. Respect for veterans must be taught and understood.
The second goal and the most important is that each student needs to realize that revisionists and some liberal college professors will try to take God out of history. It is imperative that throughout the course each student sees God’s providential hand in history as lessons unfold and take that information with them as they head out into the world.
I am looking forward to a great year and I need you to communicate with me if there are needs on your part. I will have my needs and assignments posted on Classnotes and I can best be reached at
rebeccabuffaloe@wakechristianacademy.com.
Sincerely,
Becki Buffaloe Social Studies Department Chair
CLASS RULES MRS. BUFFALOE
1. All school rules will be observed. 2. Cell phones are to never be seen or heard in the classroom. If there is a true emergency when a parent needs a child during class, the parent should contact the office and get the child out of class. Parents should never disrupt the class time with a phone call. 3. Shirttails will be in when entering the room. If not, a dress code demerit will be issued the next day. 4. If you come to class without your books, homework, paper, pencils, workbooks, AP cards, etc, you will be issued a demerit the following day for being unprepared for class. 5. Repeated talking will result in a demerit issued the next day. If improvement is not made, a suggestion for a detention will be sent to the office. 6. Spelling may count for homework, quizzes and tests. IF you have a documented spelling disability, I will need to be informed. 7. I will be very serious about not accepting messy work. Late homework will only be accepted for the reason of sickness. 8. VERY IMPORTANT- ANY homework assignment can be taken for a quiz grade and a 0 can be very damaging to the overall grade. 9. Disrespect toward any student or teacher will not be tolerated. 10. When and if I ever have a substitute, each student is to be well behaved and obedient. Serious punishment will be given if a substitute is mistreated, as that is YOUR testimony. 11. 1 Corinthians 14:33a states that God is not the author of confusion and I want that carried out in the class through actions, attitudes, and efforts. This includes keeping the classroom CLEAN!!!!!! You don’t throw paper and trash on the floor of your home, so don’t do it here. My requirement is loose-leaf paper –NO TEAR-EDGED paper. 12. Serious penalties will be given for even touching my desk or computer. This is a school policy of major importance. 13. This sounds pretty overwhelming, but I love to have fun and enjoy my students. I love to laugh and I want my students to become passionate about the subjects I teach. I feel it is an honor that God has allowed me to have the opportunity to teach them and I know that all of the rules 1-10 lead to rule 11. I am accountable to God for what goes on in this classroom and I am accountable to you as you spend your money sending your child to WCA and I want to make sure I do right by them.
